4 HP headless Witte
Specs are:
Witte Iron Works Company. 4HP @ 500 RPM.
Bore X Stroke= 5½" X 6" serial # 17265, Build in 1914. Flywheels are 24"
in diameter.
This is where I found the Witte in August 2001, on the shelve by a collector in Eastern Washington State.
We still had a few days left after the HOWT 2, so I started making a sturdy crate for the Witte. Of course there were more engines to be shipped to Holland. The other engine is a 2 HP Fairbanks Jack of All Trades. + some wheels.
The engine is quite small for a 4 HP.
The serial number is 17265, what makes it a 1914 built engine.
The piston was stuck in the cylinder and since it is a
headless engine we had to come up with an idea to get the piston out.
We thought the "grease-gun" method might work on this one. It sure did
and the piston came out with very little effort.
We already had a bad feeling about it since we got a mice nest in front of the piston. The cylinder is badly pitted and needs to be re-sleeved:-(
The engine is already running again, and better than I expected. Unfortunately no picture of it yet.
More to come....
