IHC Nonpareil 4 HP
International Harvester Company
Nonpareil Famous Engine. 4 HP @ 450 RPM
Bore X Stroke = 4 5/8 X 7" Built approximately 1908 Flywheels are 30"
diameter.
International Nonpareil. This picture
was taken in August 1996 when we got it home.
The engine was sold new (presumably) in Czechoslovakia, that's why it's on this
typical Czech truck.
The original tank was mounted next to
the engine, under the tank the IHC trademark and 3&4hp was still visible,
however the tank was to bad to be rescued.
The valve guides were very badly worn,
so new guides had to be installed. We set up the head in the lathe drilled the
worn guide and pressed in the new guide in place, then the new guide was reamed
to the correct size for the new valves.
The rebuild Nonpareil with new tank. The engine block was cracked for about 2/3. Apparently the con-rod became loose in the past and caused this damage, The block has been welded and metal sprayed to get a good oil seal. It now looks like sandblasted cast iron.
The American Bosch low tension magneto
is driven from a long eccentric strap from the cam-gear. This really is a GREAT
magnet it required no work at all!!
Picture of the "finished"
engine. We don't want to paint it but leave it in this condition. It always
draws a lot of attention at shows because it looks real old.
This is one of my favorite engines!
