Monitor 4 HP

Made by: Baker MFG Co, Evansville Wisconsin.
4 Hp @ 400 RPM, Bore X Stroke = 5" X 7" , serial # is 1822, made in late 1906.

This is a picture I took of our Monitor in August 2001 during the HOWT 1.
Picture is taken at a collectors place in California.

George made a crate for it (George made several crates actually) The other engine in the crate is the 6 HP R&V.

Crate at home (December 22-2001) We put the hopper on to see what it looks like.

The serial number is 1822, that makes it a late 1906 built engine.
Note that the serial #  is also stamped in the cylinder.

The cylinder had a crack in the water-jacket. My dad welded the crack, and we brought it to a shop where they can "metal spray" it. after their treatment it looks like new cast iron.

The serious work on the Monitor started early 2003. Goal was to have in running first, take it to a show to have a good test run, and if everything proved to be okay, take it apart and give it the "real nice" paint job.
Here we are putting it together again.

Here it's pretty much put together, and placed on a temporary cart.

Running for a longer period of time on July 19th 2003. Just one week before the HMT show.
Since it was running very nice, we thought it might be a good idea to take it to the HMT show and see how it would go if it had to run for two days on end. It turned out to be a REAL show engine. Perfectly running, and a real crowd pleaser.

Next to the Stover A type. The Stover is from 1905, and the Monitor from 1906.
The Monitor will get the same paint job as the Stover.

We took the Monitor to the HMT show in 2003. It ran great all weekend, and draw allot of attention.

We thought it would be even better if we gave it a nice paint job, so in October 2003 we took it all apart and start a loooong filling and sanding job. You are looking at hours of work in this picture;-)

Main parts just after painting.

The flywheels on their temporary made carts for moving around during painting. Here I just added the striping.

Finally it's (almost) ready! On May 15th 2004 we had it running again. Ready to travel to shows again.
